| The Fifth Pound (al-Genaih al-Khames) by Ahmed Khaled. Egypt, 2005, 14 min, MiniDV US première Shunned by Egyptian officialdom, The Fifth Pound has invariably roused controversy because it irritates prevailing conservative sensibilities in its native country. While four pounds will buy two tickets for a bus ride for a young couple, the fifth pound is the wage the young man is intimidated into paying to buy the silence of the bus driver informally entrusted with policing sexual desire. A very smart anecdote borrowed from the everyday experience of young men and women in Egypt. In Arabic with English subtitles.

Filmmaker Bio: Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1979, Ahmed Khaled graduated from the faculty
of Fine Arts at Helwan University. As an artist, he works primarily
in painting and media art. His background includes experience in
both animation and art direction. Khaled’s previous awards
include: Jury Prize in Drawing from the Salon of Youth (2002), Honor
Prize in Photography from the Salon of Youth (2004), and First Prize
in Drawing from Helwan University (1999). The Fifth Pound
is Khaled’s first movie. |
