Wake
Up, Arezoo! (Bidar Show, Arezoo!) by
Kianoush Ayari. Iran, 2005, “A riveting yet respectful drama,” Ayari’s newest film is a moving tribute to the heartache that followed an enormous earthquake in Bam in 2003. It is moments after the quake, and a young teacher in a village outside town scrambles from under the rubble and finds out that her colleagues have all died. She sets out for Bam for rescue aid but discovers that the main tragedy has occurred there. Cries of help are heard from every side, and the hospital is filled with the injured and the dead. Filmmaker Bio: Born in 1951 in Ahwaz, Iran, Ayari started making 8mm films at the Ahwaz chapter of the Free Cinema Group in 1970. He began professional filmmaking with The Rhythm of the Train in 1976. His films have won numerous prizes at international festivals. His short films include The Reflection (1971), The Trap (1972), Beyond the Fire (1973), The Hunt (1974), The Mad Man and the Kid (1975), River of Poison (1975), Dust of the Rain (1976), The Summer Song (1977), The Breaths (1979), the three-part Sweet Earth (1980), and the animation The Encounter. His feature films are Whirl of the Demon (1985), Specter of the Scorpion (1986), Beyond the Fire (1987), The Abadanis (1992), Bull's Horn (1991), To Be or Not to Be (1999), The Persian Feast (2001). |
