Synopsis
After more than a decade of civil war, the dreams of Algeria’s youth live overseas. In the partially built, deserted suburbs, behind a façade of luxury development, Kamel and his girlfriend Zina search for illegal travel documents and a smuggler to get them to Italy, to join his friends. As they seek out a shady character named Bosco, the sun-soaked ruins on the fringes of Algiers act as a metaphor for the unfulfilled desires of the generation now coming of age. Though Kamel may choose Rome over Algeria, Teguia’s insistence on a story about the future rather than the past exposes a deep love for this conflicted country.
Filmmaker's Biography
Born in 1966 in Algiers, Tariq Teguia studied visual arts and philosophy. In 2003, he taught contemporary art history at the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Algiers. From 1993 to 1995 he was assistant to photographer Krzysztof Pruszkowski in Paris; before that, he was a freelance photographer for the Alger-Républicain. Teguia has directed a number of short films, including Kech’ mouvement? (1992), The Dog (Le Chien, 1996), Ferrailles d’attente (1998) and The Fence (Haçla, 2002). Rome Rather Than You is his first feature film.
