The Roof (Al-Sateh), by Kamal Aljafari. Palestine/Germany, 2006, 61 mins, BetaSP, NY Premiere
Cologne-based Palestinian filmmaker Aljafari journeys back to his homeland and his family. Despite the intense political context of the film, its focus is universal, as the director explores his family’s lives and the importance of place and home. Past is entrenched in the present as Aljafari combines a glimpse of his own experience as a political prisoner with lingering gazes, voiced frustrations and long shots along the peripheries of unfinished homes and the graffiti-marked barrier wall.

Filmmaker's Biography
Born in 1972, Kamal Aljafari graduated from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne in 2003. In addition to The Roof, he has also made Visit Iraq (2003). He is the recipient of the Visual Art Prize of the city of Cologne for the year 2004 and artist fellowship grants from Kunstfonds and Kunststiftung NRW. His work has been shown internationally at film festivals and art galleries. He is currently in preproduction for his next documentary film, Port of Memory.
