Salade Maison (Salata Baladi), by Nadia Kamel. Egypt/France/Switzerland, 2007, 105 min, Digibeta, NY Premiere

Tue, Nov 13, 7 P.M. at 612 Schermerhorn Hall, Columbia University
In this powerful documentary, Nadia Kamel, a longtime assistant to Youssef Chahine, paints a sensitive and haunting portrait of her own family and explores the complex roots of modern-day Egypt. When Kamel’s nephew hears a sermon encouraging religious war, she takes it upon herself to acquaint him with the history of his maternal grandmother Maria: using footage of visits by Maria and her husband to relatives in Italy, Israel and Palestine, Kamel recounts the story of a remarkable woman who is part Jewish, part Christian, part Muslim—and all at once a feminist, a communist, an Italian and an Arab. Her history poignantly expresses the tensions and disfigurements brought about in a culture forced to accommodate the boundaries that politics artificially draw. A deeply touching tale of humanity, tolerance and diversity.
