VHS Kahloucha by Nejib Belkadhi. Tunisia, 2006, 80 min, DVCam, NY Premiere

Amateur Tunisian filmmaker Moncef Kahloucha is the subject of this documentary that rolls at least three films into one. VHS Kahloucha follows Kahloucha as he makes his latest feature, from buying props and casting parts, to shooting and editing, to screening and even renting out his own copies. His film, Tarzan of the Arabs, is indeed as humorous, imaginative, and action-packed as Moncef promises throughout. Yet at the same time, it is also an insightful portrait into the realities of the contemporary Tunisian economy, its effects on unemployed young men, women, fathers and mothers, and the promise and problems of escape to Europe.
