Mainline
(Khoon Bazi) by Rakhshan Bani-Etemad and Mohsen Abdolvahab. Iran, 2006, 80 min, 35mm, NY Premiere
Sara is not the typical Iranian bride-to-be. Before her betrothed arrives from Toronto for their wedding, she must kick her heroin addiction. The race to clean up seems impossible, especially when she throws her wedding gown in the middle of the road in a violent moment of withdrawal. Almost arrested in a raid on drug dealers at a local mall, Sarah is finally taken by her fed-up mother, Sima (Bita Farahi), to a rehab clinic outside of town for professional help. A brilliant performance by Baran Kosari as the rebellious, self-destructive daughter shows us an entirely new face of Iranian youth in this brutally honest film about the psychological struggle of overcoming serious addiction.
